Building a new balance from Cow to Kitchen
Fundamental changes and a better balance with more nature, better animal welfare and less climate impact in the food system are needed.

Challenge
Dairy products are an important part of healthy eating habits. But the way they are produced has major consequences for our planet. A fundamental change in approach and system is needed if production is to become sustainable. There is a need for new thinking.
Task
The task we were given was – together with Thise and Thise's farmers – to develop concrete lighthouse concepts that find answers to some key challenges:
- How do we ensure less climate load?
- How do we create better animal welfare?
- How do we ensure more nature?
Results
Locally developed concepts that act as levers of change in the food system.
5 lighthouse concepts:
LOCALLY PRODUCED FEED
- 100% locally produced feed. Zero soy.
THE PURE COW
- Healthier animals - halving antibiotic consumption
GREEN ENERGY
- Locally produced biomass for the dairy
CARBON STORAGE IN THE SOIL
- Set-aside of low-floor soils - analysis of arable land
BIODIVERSITY
- More space for nature 10% more biodiversity
The concepts can be adapted and scaled so that they can be used by partners in Scandinavia and Europe.
The project is supported by EIT Climate-Kic.

"It is fantastically gratifying that in this way Thise begins a journey towards soy-free production. Although you can buy certified soy, it is clear that purely Danish-produced feed is the best guarantee if you want to ensure that the world's forests are not cleared for soy cultivation. This could be the beginning of a new positive wave in Danish food production, where other producers will hopefully follow Thise's example,"
Executive Vice President Jens Visholm, Coop, who is the main recipient of Thise's dairy products
